Ecolibrium Farms, a diversified, organic vegetable farm in Redmond, WA is hiring an energetic, hard-working, experienced Farm Manager to join our team ahead of the 2024 season. We are driven by market gardening principles, utilizing human-scale tactics and keeping a light footprint, as we produce a large quantity of quality produce on small acreage, using ecologically-sound practices. We have high expectations of our team - both physically and mentally, and hope to build a successful team of fully committed members looking to ensure the proper function of a successful farm.
Under the direction of the Farm Director, the Farm Manager will oversee all aspects of implementing the farm plan from field prep to post-harvest handling. This person will eventually be in charge of training and managing a seasonal crew. The ideal candidate will share our fervent passion for growing the best tasting food in a way that is good for the land. And they will also have a desire to keep growing their farming knowledge and skills. Good communication and leadership skills are essential as the position requires daily collaboration with the entire crew of Ecolibrium from intern to owner.
Due to the seasonal nature of vegetable production, the Farm Manager must be willing and able to work long and irregular hours during peak season as the needs of the farm dictate. Applicants must be available on weekends, when necessary, and should not plan extended vacation time during the primary growing season (April 15-October 15). Wintertime hours are much reduced and extended time off for holiday travel (Nov 15-Jan 1) is possible.
This is a full-time, salaried position. Salary is competitive and dependent on experience. Working directly with the Farm Director tasks include:
Developing seed and material purchase orders
Communicating with clients on a weekly basis
Maintaining farm equipment in working order
Managing additional farm staff
Maintaining adequate inventory of seeds, plants and supplies
Work to develop crop plan
Working independently and with a farm crew to oversee the day-to-day operations of the farm. Tasks include:
Manage farm staff
Lead daily morning check-ins
Train seasonal farm staff
Maintain positive attitude and team cohesion amongst the field crew
Motivate crew to accomplish time-sensitive tasks and maintain efficiency
Maintain and oversee use of daily operational systems
Inspire and lead crew with enthusiasm
Completing bed prep so adequate planting space is available for transplanting and seeding
Accomplishing transplanting and seeding on schedule
Ensuring irrigation, cultivation, and cultural care are accomplished in a timely fashion
Ensuring harvesting and pack out are accomplished on time
Ensuring produce deliveries happen on time
Assessing harvest and maintaining close communications with clients in order to adjust planting schedule to meet demand
Managing cover crops to maintain soil fertility.
Maintaining accurate farm records for organic certification.
Maintaining/mowing unplanted areas around the production field.
Required Skills
3+ years of experience on a diversified vegetable farm, 1+ year working on a market garden
Experience in a leadership role
Appropriate tractor and machinery skills to accomplish tasks above.
Knowledge of irrigation systems for vegetable production - field and greenhouse.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work long hours in all types of weather conditions.
Ability to operate heavy machinery and power tools confidently and safely.
Ability to use Excel and other recordkeeping software to maintain accurate farm records.
Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and clients.
Ability to effectively lead a crew to accomplish time sensitive tasks.
Proven track record of operating a vehicle safely, valid driver’s license and ability to drive large passenger van/box truck
Positive attitude and enthusiasm for sustainable food production.
Desired Skills
Experience with record keeping for organic certification.
Experience with managing systems and documentation for GAP compliance.
Mechanical equipment repair and maintenance skills.
Experience with greenhouse construction.
Experience with nursery plant propagation and care.
